This was my sequence of shots for the film. The giant forest spiders were broken up into three major chunks: creep, attack and chase. I was responsible for a large portion of the creep sequence.
First we animated many variations of walk cycles and plane transfers such as horizontal to 45 degrees to vertical. Once we had the background plates, spheres were animated to get general size and velocity on screen. A series of proprietary tools mixed our different walk cycles together based on the velocity of our spheres, and ensured our feet did not go through the geometry of the world or even other spiders, if they were crawling over each other. All foreground spiders and the ones on webs were hand keyed.
The wide shot when we first see the spiders was not my shot, however it was such a large shot we all had to lend a hand to get it completed. The movie is much darker, and I raised the levels to showcase the animation a little better. |
